I entered my room at Pearl Continental and inserted my card in the key holder. Immediately, the whole room lit bright. All lights - 6 in room, 5 in wash room, 3 in cupboard and 2 on study table - turned on. As I am kind of paranoid about conserving precious electricity, I went about the room switching off more than 80% of the lights that were not required. But I wondered how many others in the hotel even noticed, forget about switching them off.
The other day, I heard a speaker say in a conference 'Frugality is Good'. It is good for business, society, economy as well as personal and spiritual well being. Business that are frugal build efficiencies. Societies that are frugal re-cycle and re-use products, generate less waste and become environment friendly. Individuals who are frugal learn to respond to their needs rather than peer pressure. And Economies that are frugal do not end up in the current economic mess.
As far as all the hotels worldwide are concerned, they should be instructed to install economy switch that gives adequate minimal lighting in all their rooms. It can be put as a default option and customer can choose luxury lighting if he/she wants. And so should shops and restaurants. They can use the economy switch during their housekeeping exercises. And all the saved carbon dioxide could go as carbon credits (worth millions :) ) to my account.
